Remote with RoadBotics Recap

The team at RoadBotics just finished the third week of our Web Event Series, Remote with RoadBotics! Over three weeks, we covered a wide range of topics from utilizing Python to digitizing infrastructure to applications of Artificial Intelligence – and everything in between.

In a concerted effort between RoadBotics and valued partners, our mission is to share our expertise to educate and inform clients, followers, friends, and even ourselves!

In case you missed them, here’s a recap of our most popular web events:

Pavement Planning with RoadWay

Todd Saulle, RoadBotics’ Product Manager, walks you through how to utilize RoadWay, RoadBotics’ proprietary road assessment software, for pavement planning. Using real examples, he demonstrates how to develop a pothole blitz and crack-seal plan. RoadWay’s tools and features allow users to pinpoint exactly where maintenance needs to occur and that information can be easily shared with the maintenance crew.

In this preview clip, see one of RoadWay’s newest features, the pothole layer, in action.

Digitizing Your Roads: How to Build a GIS Shapefile from a Paper Map or No Map At All

Lisa McCune-Noll, RoadBotics’ Cartographer, demonstrates how to digitize a road map into GeoJSON or GIS shapefile for open source use. She walks you through the process of uploading your file on Mapshaper, utilizing the blueprinter to select the roads to include in your map, and exporting your completed GIS shapefile.

Pro-Tips: Using Python to Up Your GIS Game

Using North Carolina’s DOT open source data on Average Annual Daily Traffic (AADT), Miguel Dickson, RoadBotics’ Head of Data and AI, shows the benefits of using Python to analyze GIS data as opposed to ArcGIS or similar software. Miguel executes isolations of heavy trafficked roads and nulls. The Python tool GeoPandas allows users to easily extract data for analysis, for example, using linear regression tests to identify patterns in the data.

The State of AI as a Tool for Solving Modern Infrastructure Problems

RoadBotics’ President, Benjamin Schmidt, and Chief Scientist, Christoph Mertz, explain ways to utilize Artificial Intelligence (AI) to address infrastructure issues. Dr. Schmidt begins by explaining the importance of modernizing the infrastructure space for effective management of the built world environment. Dr. Mertz covers the evolutions of autonomous vehicles and applications of AI including Deep Learning and 3D reconstruction.

Digitizing You Urban Sewer and Stormwater Infrastructure for Climate Resilience and High Performance Asset Management

Emily Mercurio, Co-Founder and CEO of CivicMapper, explains the importance of digitizing sewer and stormwater infrastructure. She walks you through the benefits and process for digitizing this infrastructure. CivicMapper’s projects including the Flush It app, Network Tracing tool, and Urban Watershed Characterization were born from ALCOSAN’s Sewer Atlas.

Modeling the Degradation of Pavement Conditions Over Time with AI

One of RoadBotics’ advisors, Ahmed Faheem, describes his work utilizing historical road data and AI to create Roadway Life Cycle Models. The three Machine Learning models were created using a dataset from Wisconsin’s DOT. Dr. Faheem gives recommendations for implementation of potential applications of the model for future use.

This preview clip explains the framework for this geo-relational analysis.
