United States Department of Transportation (USDOT) Secretary Pete Buttigieg recently awarded $435 million in grant funding to 34 University Transportation Centers (UTCs) across the country.
The grants will fund innovative research as a means to improve the safety and efficiency of infrastructure like roads, bridges, rail, aviation, and shipping.
Each UTC will focus on solving transportation challenges local to its region through partnerships with surrounding transportation authorities.

Among the 34 UTCs selected is RoadBotics by Michelin’s “birthplace”, Carnegie Mellon University (CMU). Through Mobility21, CMU’s research partnership with USDOT, they will receive $4 million annually to research challenges related to integrating autonomous, connected, electric and shared vehicles technologies into transportation networks.
